Unica Foundation started the WaSH (Water, Sanitation and Hygine) project in Kalika, Kaski in cooperation with the Nepal Red Cross Society (NRCS), Kaski. The main aim of the project is to provide safe drinking water, promoting hygiene and sanitation and training for generating income to the local villagers (324 household).
Sanitation promotion and income-generating activities are carried out under software activities, while the construction (hardware) activities are focused on safe water supply. Training in poultry farming with token support is one of the software activities aimed at supporting the project in the long term by strengthening the socio-economic status of the community. The idea is to provide income-generating skills and to support them to keep themselves financially and socially independent.
Initially, 30 local participants, 14 women and 16 men, received training for poultry farming. Three participants of the training receive NPR 30,000 to start the poultry farm after three days of training and they have independently started poultry farming with 300 to 400 pullets. The business starts earning in 60 days, the initial income varied from NPR 30,000 to 35,000. In addition to selling the chicken, the manure from chicken is used in the kitchen gardening, thus farms help to increase the production of the corps and vegetables. The impact of the training is already visible before the project is finished.
The saving of chicken sales is used to support the education of children, their livelihood and further expansion of poultry farming. The original loan volume has been refunded once the business starts earning and shifted to the other members of the community and the other members can start a new poultry farm. Community people are happy with the training skills and support of the project. The aim of the training is to enable the community to remain independent, socially and economically to a certain extent achieved.
