The Solar Lifting Water Supply and Sanitation (WASH) Project started in Hamsapur on December 11, 2017 for the duration of one and half years. People had to spend a lot of time to fetch water as a regular routine before the Hamsapur WASH Project was implemented. Hamsapur is located in a rural, hilly region, 28 kilometers far from the city of Pokhara and has limited access to transport. The safe drinking water and the sanitation situation are currently quite poor and the tap system of the community is old and dysfunctional. People have to spend a lot of time to fetch water for their household. It takes an average of 1 hour to get a barrel of water from the springs. Those barrels contain about 15 liters, which is not sufficient for household uses. The Hamsapur community has a total of 89 households, inhabiting 454 people who would all benefit from the project.
The Nepal Red Cross Society (NRCS) Kaski and the Unica Foundation supported the community in supplying water at household level and have also trained the inhabitants in various income-generating activities such as sewing, beekeeping, vegetable growing and poultry farming. In addition to water supply and income-generating activities, women’s empowerment and financial stability were also important drivers of the project. At the Hamsapur WASH project page, we published a few case studies of the income generating activities and its impact.
