The project
Panchakanya Training Institute (PTI) did some market research in around Pokhara and came up with a proposal that carpentry training would be appropriate for the youth who are seeking job opportunity in town. PTI will facilitate that all the participant would be connected with the job market after their completion of the training successfully. PTI has prior experience and sufficient infrastructure in Pokhara to conduct vocational training. Moreover, Unica has a cooperation with PTI since couple years to run different training such as, plumbing, arc welding etc.
PTI would make an announcement via local newspaper and/or radios to invite interested participants and select them based on their interest, financial background and geographical location. Participants who has no or less means to afford but high interest and participant who come from remote areas would get priority in the selection for the training.
Once the training is completed, there will be a test which would be administered by CTEVT (The Council for Technical Education and Vocational Training). Participants who pass this test will be awarded with a certificate so that they could either find related job easily or could start even own small workshop.
Generally Nepalese youths are compelled to go abroad (specially in Gulf countries) to find job. More than five million people are supposedly working in Gulf countries and Malaysia already, most of them are as unskilled labor thus get a low salary. Once people get vocational training, either they can find a job in Nepal or they would get better pay if they decide to go abroad as labor.
Milestones
- Two trainers (Mr. Loknath Pudasaini & Mr. Shyam BK) gave training for the participants. Beside the regular furniture making, they also taught so-called ‘skill plus package’ which includes one day of Life Skill Training and Business Skill Training. These types of additional training can help them understand their life in a different way and make their own way to the business world where they can earn for themselves and live prosperous lives.
- After the skill training all the participants had gone for the employment which they have got easily compared to the situation before skill training. Now, they have got skill and can do the job well so the employers also won’t hesitate to provide job opportunities and the income status of all those participants has increased after the skill training which helps them to uplift their living standard which is our main target. Likewise, more than 80% of the participants are doing jobs after the skill training and earning for themselves which is making their life better and nowadays they are planning to receive higher level of skill training as they want to do more than just a job.
- The participants now can make wooden bed, cupboard, desk, benches, showcase and other home use furniture items.
Issue
However, once the training is completed, the participants could not sit for the final test as the CTECT has not announced the date. CTEVT is the main authority in the country to certify skills. They are quite big administratively as well. Therefore, they sometimes take time to announce and conduct such tests of different subjects. As soon as CTEVT announces, PTI will bring all the participants to appear in that test.
