The Nepal Red Cross Society (NRCS), Kaski and Suryodaya Urja (SU) Pvt. Ltd. (the authorised agent of Grundfos solar-based pumps in Nepal) have signed a contract in Kathmandu for the installation of the solar PV and the pumping system for the Kalika WASH project. The project was initiated with the aim of providing clean drinking water for more than 1700 villagers in Kalika.
Kalika is situated in an upland region of the Pokhara valley where availability of good quality drinking water has been a major concern for decades. There is no water source above the settlement, so the only option is to bring water uphill by pump. To do this, water has to be lifted 520 metres uphill (in two stages of 260m each) using pumps operated by solar power.
The contract specifies that SU will import Grundfos pumps from Singapore and complete the installation work by January 2018. The NRCS will complete the civil engineering work beforehand and cooperate with SU to effectuate installation of the system.
This project is made possible thanks to a financial contribution from the Unica Foundation. It is the fifth drinking water project Unica has worked on jointly with the NRCS.
