Unica Foundation and Nepal Water for Health (NEWAH) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to launch a Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WaSh) project in Naretar village of Udayapur District in eastern Nepal. NEWAH (established in 1992) is a national non-governmental organization (NGO) that specializes in drinking water, health promotion and sanitation. This project will be the first cooperation between the two organizations.
The project will directly serve 54 households, and 290 people in the community will benefit from it. Also one health post with birthing center facilities with 5 staff members, one VDC Office with 5 staff members, and the local school with 153 students and 10 teachers will benefit from this new WASH project. It means that in total 483 people will have access to the improved drinking water facilities. In the school the students will have access to the improved sanitation facility and the people in the village can attend hygiene promotions sessions.
The village of Naretar is situated uphill and there is no water source, therefore the water from downhill has to be lifted and distributed via an individual tap in each house. A submersible pump produced by Grundfos will be installed to lift the water in 89 meter vertical height. The pump will function fully on solar energy, and is able to pump around 25 cubic meter water per day.
This project will take about 15 months. NEWAH has already started the process to get an approval from the Social Welfare council – the governing body of NGO sector in Nepal – for this project. Once the approval is granted, Unica Foundation and NEWAH will sign the complete project agreement and start the execution. We expect the project to commence officially from 1 July 2017.
